Chairmen and councillors of the 23 local government councils in Rivers State, along with their supporters yesterday staged a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt, the state capital, over the plan by the Rivers State House of Assembly to pass a resolution empowering Governor Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike to dissolve the local government councils.
The elected council officials, under the aegis of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALCON), efforts to carry their protest into the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, located along Moscow Road, was resisted by men of the Nigeria Police, led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, who barricaded the main entrance into the complex.

The activities of the protesters, who carried placards that read, “Wike is an embodiment of thuggery, impunity”, “Wike is inviting anarchy in Rivers State”, “Rivers people want peace and not dissolution of councils”, “PDP should remember the Supreme Court judgement on the dissolution of LGAs”.Addressing newsmen earlier, legal adviser of ALGON in the state, and chairman of Degema local government council, Hon. Sogbeye Eli, warned that the association would resist any attempt by Wike to dissolve the local government councils in the state. Eli said, “We are aware that this plot is a grave impunity and recklessness.
