Heavily Armed Sea pirates abduct five PDP leaders in Brass,Bayelsa

Suspected sea pirates struck on Friday in Bayelsa State, a day preceding the state House of Assembly elections, by abducting five leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

It was learnt that the hoodlums attacked a passenger boat conveying five aides of the Deputy Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Chief Sam Ateki, along the waterways of Brass in Brass Local Government Area of the state.

According to reports, other passenger boats plying the waterways at the time of the attack, including a boat conveying the State Chairman of the Nigerian Union Journalists, Mr. Tare Akono, narrowly escaped from the area.

The PDP leaders, who were said to be heading for Twon Brass to participate in today’s House of Assembly elections in the state, were reportedly whisked away to an unknown destination.
An eyewitness, who identified himself as Tonye, told said the sea pirates were heavily armed.

He said they shot sporadically to scare the boat driver, who was taking the passengers made up of members of the Twon Brass PDP and aides of the deputy speaker to their destination.

While relating his account, Akono said, “We escaped attack because of timely information given to us by the fishing woman. When she saw our boat moving to the scene of the attack, she told us about what had happened. Then, we turned back and hid at Okoroma community until after the pirates finished the operation.”
The attack has however reduced the movement of voters to various coastal communities to participate in today’s election in the state.
But the State Police Command through its spokesperson, Mr. Asinim Butswat, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, while confirming the story, denied that the PDP stalwarts were abducted.
