A Gudu Upper Area Court in the FCT on Thursday sentenced one Bona Urahi of Oroaga Street, Garki 2, Abuja to seven strokes of cane for stealing sugar cane. The Judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, also ordered Urahi to clean the court surroundings.
He instructed the accused to be of good behaviour. Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Mohammed Garba, told the court that one Joseph Christian of No. 42, Nsukka Street, Garki 2, Abuja reported the matter at the Garki Police Station on July 19.
He said that Urahi criminally trespassed into the complainant’s farm located at Garki 2 and cut down his sugar cane but was arrested while taking the sugar cane out of the farm. According to the prosecutor, investigations into the matter revealed that it was the second time the accused had stolen sugar cane from the complainant’s farm.
He said that the offence contravened the Penal Code. Urahi pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, saying
his action was caused by hunger.
