He was sentenced in absentia on Tuesday by a Tripoli court along with other senior members of the former regime, overthrown in 2011, the Associated Press reported.
The group were accused of war crimes and suppressing peaceful protests during the revolution, a court heard in early June.
Seif al-Islam is currently being held by a militia that refuses to hand him over to the central government.
The court sentenced eight others to death as well, including former Libyan spy chief Abdullah al-Senoussi.
