The National Universities Commission (NUC) has asked University vice chancellors to review the existing grading system with a view to arriving at a generally acceptable and uniform method of computing Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in the Nigerian University System (NUS).
Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie made the remarks yesterday at a workshop on review of grading system in Nigeria universities in Abuja .
He said it had become worrisome that most universities were derailing from the original academic traditions that guaranteed high quality education in the country.
According to him,
some disciplines used the 6 grade points of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and 0 for letter grades of A,B, C, D, E and F while others removed the E grade thereby having a grading system with grade points of 5, 4, 3, 2, and 0 for letter grades of A,B, C, D, and F.
“These systems have incontrovertibly introduced two systems of grading within the Nigerian university system that have technical implication on the grading of students,” he said as reported by Daily Trust .
Explaining the importance of the review, he said apart from fostering inter disciplinary collaboration, it will help students to focus on their academic pursuit to ensure that there was an acceptable level of competence within the system.
While emphasizing on quality assurance, the NUC executive secretary noted that some schools repeat students instead of writing the normal carry-over and making them run three semesters in a year.
He said the minimum grading for every university should be 5 points and that no student should be allowed to graduate with a pass degree but instead should move such students into another course to allow them graduate honourably.
The common grading system is expected to facilitate inter university credit transfer and students mobility within and outside the country rather than using discretional method of grading in each discipline.
