"You always have to put your best face forward," she said. "It's a given that we are going to be in front of cameras and that we have to answer all types of questions."
Lowry announced that Puerto Rico will now send runner-up Brenda Jimenez to the international contest.
In a Facebook statement Caride said she was dealing with personal problems at the time.
She wrote:
"Beauty queens are not exempt from having a bad day."
"I allowed my feelings to get in the way of my work.".
Caride said she will always treasure her brief spell as the champion Instagram
But the excuse was not enough to placate the competition officials, who took her title away before the final pageant for the first time in the country's history.
Caride has since apologised, and said she will will always treasure the "lovely memories of having been Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2016."
Meanwhile new contestant Brenda Jimenez looked surprised as she was presented to a press conference.
