A Burundi military General, Athanase Kararuza and his wife while dropping off their daughter at school were ambushed and killed by a group of heavily armed men in Bujumbara.
General, Athanase who was also security advisor to Burundi's vice-president with his wife died instantly from the attach while their daughter sustained injuries and is currently in the hospital.
Over 400 people have been reportedly killed in unrest since President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he would run for the third term last April and a string of high-ranking army officials have been targeted during the conflict. Security forces have also been accused by Amnesty Officials of killing opponents and dumping them in mass graves.
Shortly after the attack, the International Criminal court announced that it was starting a preliminary investigation into the violence in Burundi. This will decide whether a full-blown investigation will take place, which could result in charges against those accused of being behind the violence.
