Reps Summons, Prison Boss Over Assault on Female Member

The House of Representatives has summoned the Comptroller-General of Prisons, Peter Ezenwa Ekpendu over alleged assault on a female member of the green chamber, Mrs. Onyemaechi Mrakpor.
The lawmaker who represents Aniocha North/Aniocha South /Oshimili North/Oshimili South Federal Constituency of Delta State, was allegedly slapped on Wednesday by an aide of the C-G of Prisons for daring to overtake the convoy of the Prison boss within the National Assembly premises.
The incident was said to have occurred when Mr. Ekpendu was leaving the National Assembly complex after an appearance before the Senate Committee on Interior.

Raising the matter on the floor on Thursday, Minority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor cited Section 16 of the Powers and Privileges Act which protects legislators from assault.

Ogor in his words said,
“it’s unacceptable and very embarrassing for an aide of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Prison Service to slap a female Honourable member of the House. He has completely offended the House.”

Contributing to the debate, Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje (PDP, Abia) said the C-G was a symbol of what goes on in the prison yard, regretting that the prison boss lacks honour and integrity and unfit to wear the prison’s uniform.

For House Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, “this is the time when we need to rally round her. Not just as a member, but as a woman.

“I’m not interested in the issue of fair hearing. The man is guilty of assault, battery offence and violence against women.”
The motion was adopted by the House and its committee on Interior was given until Tuesday next week to submit its report for further legislative action.
