Nigeria top countries with poorest population - Report

A new report by the Institute for Security Studies has ranked Nigeria first among 10 countries in Africa with the largest extremely poor population. Nigeria is followed by the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Madagascar and Kenya. The situation in the country has been attributed to high levels of inequality in terms of development, which is concentrated in urban areas rather than the rural areas.
The ISS is an African organisation that aims to enhance human security on the continent. It does independent and authoritative research, provides expert policy analysis and advice, and delivers practical training and technical assistance. Corruption poses a major threat to good governance in Africa.
The capacity of governments to monitor, assess and respond to the problem is limited and the political sensitivities make dealing with corruption especially challenging. Through policy research and technical assistance, the ISS contributes to the development of more appropriate and effective policies and regulatory frameworks to combat corruption and promote democratic governance.
Launching the report on Tuesday, the Institute’s Executive Director, Jakkie Cillers, said with pro-poor policies that try to provide social assistance and other support to rural areas and poor people, the country can fairly enjoy massive reduction of poverty. “Social insurance can be used to help those who are vulnerable to adapt to shocks without suffering the kinds of losses that drive people to or keep them in poverty,” he stated. “Many countries already have programmes like these, but they are often fragmente
